Question to people who have lived in the old east block.?

I would like to ask you a question. How was it in the old communist bloc, could you move freely rom one country to another? Visit other communist countries? E.g. could a person living in Poland or GDR travel to Russia? Could you choose where to live in your own country? Could you visit any country in the West, for example West Berlin?
