What events or developments led to the collapse of the Soviet bloc and end of the Cold War by the 1980's?

The U.S.S.R.'s resources were drained by the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan, then when the U.S. increased it's defense spending the soviets attempted to follow but couldn't, resulting in the collapse of their economy.
